The project for a new performing arts centre at Sherborne Girls received Planning Permission on 18 July 2016. This updated scheme for a new performing arts centre is, essentially, in layout, siting, content and scope the same as the approved scheme with some variations that are intended to improve its outlook, performance, accessibility and enable better use by the school and the public, who will also be invited to enjoy these new facilities. The new form of the building celebrates its profile as a key performing arts facility at the heart of the campus, which links to two existing arts buildings: The Art Department and the Stuart Centre, which will become the new Drama Centre.
The profile of the new Music Centre will contrast the central mass of the recital hall from the surrounding lower foyer areas and music school spaces, which will have flat roofs. The rising form of the hall will remain the same height while presenting a more distinctive profile. The whole composition of these arts buildings, which sit on a gently sloping site, will be set in a new parkland, a context of signature trees, pathways and informal planting.
